England's history-making penalty shootout triumph over Colombia in photos

England held their nerve and ensured that they advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals after a dramatic penalty shootout with Colombia on Tuesday.

Here's a look at how it went down. …

England's Harry Kane was first to step up to the spot for the Three Lions, expertly drilling his shot low past David Ospina after Radamel Falcao converted Colombia's opening penalty.

Juan Cuadrado, Marcus Rashford and Luis Muriel followed Kane with successful spot kicks, before Jordan Henderson's effort was blocked by a sprawling Ospina.

It appeared that Henderson was about to join the likes of Stuart Pearce, Chris Waddle and current manager Gareth Southgate in the pantheon of England's shootout scapegoats.

Mateus Uribe, however, couldn't capitalise on Colombia's break, following Henderson's blank with a shot smashed against the crossbar.

Tottenham Hotspur's Kieran Trippier was next up, keeping his cool to fire his shot high and past Ospina's right shoulder to bring the shootout level at 3-3.

Back on level terms, England keeper Jordan Pickford then sent English hearts soaring -- brilliantly blocking Carlos Bacca's penalty with a strong left hand.

Knowing that a goal would end decades' worth of heartache and send the Three Lions into the World Cup quarterfinals, Eric Dier stepped up to the spot with both teams -- and millions around the world -- watching on.

The Spurs star struck hard and true, leaving Ospina grasping at air.

And sending most of his teammates into raptures. Henderson, left, looks overcome with relief.

Managers Jose Pekerman and Southgate move quickly to console the Colombian side after the dramatic finale.

For Southgate, 22 years after his own nightmare from 12 yards, it was a night that he and his players finally put to bed national footballing hoodoo.
