German FA will not support Sepp Blatter at FIFA presidential elections

The German FA (DFB) will not vote for Sepp Blatter at the FIFA presidential elections this month, its president has said.

Blatter, 79, is seeking his fifth term as FIFA president when the votes are cast in Zurich on May 29, and the Swiss is strong favourite to be re-elected.

However, DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach told Bild: "The DFB chairmanship continues to take the view that a change at the FIFA top would be in order."

He added that he has little hope for change, though, saying: "It would be a huge surprise should Blatter not be elected for another four years."

It appears likely that Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein will be Blatter's sole challenger for the position after Dutch FA president Michael van Praag exited the race on Thursday.

Former Portugal international Luis Figo is also expected to withdraw his candidacy but Niersbach said: "We need to wait and see who will run for president in the end, and thus it appears that we will only decide in Zurich who will receive our vote."

Blatter is widely expected to clinch the 105 votes he requires to be elected, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF)'s president, Issa Hayatou, having declared that its 54 members would vote for the 79-year-old.

Figo said last month, though, that he did not believe all African nations would vote as announced.
