LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Portugal coach Fernando Santos has won an appeal to cut his ban for misconduct at the World Cup while coaching Greece.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it halved an "excessive" eight-match ban imposed by FIFA. Two matches of the sanction were deferred for a six-month probationary period.

CAS says its panel found Santos guilty of "improper conduct" during Greece's second-round loss to Costa Rica last June in Brazil.

Santos was sent from the dugout after extra time, which finished 1-1. Greece then lost the penalty shootout.

The court says Santos was "protesting against the referee and casting doubts on his impartiality."

Santos is barred from contact with players at the stadium in two European Championship qualifiers. Portugal hosts Serbia on March 29 and visits Armenia on June 13.
