Report: Sabella to resign after final

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella will step down after Sunday's World Cup final against Germany, his agent told a local Argentine radio station on Friday.

"To go at the top is always positive. I believe he gave everything to the national team and that now is the time to give way to another person," Eugenio Lopez told FM Delta.

Sabella took over the reins of the Argentina team in 2011, following their early exit from the Copa America.

"He is leaving, no matter what happens, Sabella is leaving the team," Lopez told Ole. "Whether they win or not, the cycle is finished."

Lopez said that Sabella had this date for resigning in mind since "Day 1. At least that's what I think. He could change his mind but for now I don't think he will."

Sabella will take a break and then find a new challenge, Lopez said.

"Even though the AFA [Argentine federation] wants him to stay," Lopez said. "Alejandro's idea, in this case, is different from that of other coaches. Cycles end. He always felt he would finish the World Cup and then leave the team."

Argentina hadn't advanced beyond the quarterfinals since the 1990 World Cup.
