Manuel Neuer: I'll carry on sweeping

Joachim Loew was full of praise for his "libero" goalkeeper Manuel Neuer following his tackling exploits in their 2-1 win against Algeria.

Manuel Neuer has said he wants to continue playing a "sweeper-keeper" role for Germany -- but is aware how risky it could be.

Neuer was outstanding as Joachim Low's side squeezed past Algeria in the round of 16, winning 2-1 to advance into the last eight.

He regularly raced from his penalty area to intercept through balls, and German weekly Die Zeit said his performance had "changed the goalkeeper position," adding: "Maybe, after this match, you need to think of another word for goalkeeper."

The Bayern Munich keeper, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, said: "Sure, it's risky -- I cannot be late by even one step. It's clear that I will receive a red card if I clash with an opponent."

Germany goalkeeping coach Andreas Kopke praised Neuer as the best sweeper since Franz Beckenbauer, but the keeper said: "There haven't been that many sweepers since Franz -- that's why it's not the best compliment."

Above a picture of Neuer, football weekly kicker headlined: "The 'false 5.' Sweeper-keeper Neuer will also be important against France. A risky model."

The paper said: "If Die Nationalmannschaft wants to achieve big things in Brazil, Neuer is key to it as a special keeper with hands and feet."

Meanwhile, Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle -- one of the few Germany players to not come under fire for his performance after arriving as a half-time substitute -- said he had enjoyed a touch of luck when opening the scoring early in extra time.

"It [the goal] was a bit of everything, really," he told kicker. "I wanted to play the ball with my heel, but that it worked out like that was also luck.

"But I also scored with my heel in the friendly against Armenia before the World Cup. It's not a brand new way of scoring."
