Jozy Altidore won't start for U.S.

U.S. forward Jozy Altidore, who on Monday announced his strained hamstring has healed enough to play, will not start on Tuesday against Belgium in the World Cup round of 16.

Kyle Beckerman will also begin the game on the bench after starting all of the Americans' matches in the group stage, with Klinsmann choosing Geoff Cameron in his place in a new 4-3-3 formation.

Cameron, who previously played in defense, will move into the midfield with Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones, while Alejandro Bedoya and Graham Zusi join captain Clint Dempsey in attack.

Fabian Johnson, Omar Gonzalez, Matt Besler and DaMarcus Beasley will form the back line for the second straight game, with Tim Howard again in goal.

The Americans will try to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002 when they face Belgium.

"For some of the guys, it's the last opportunity, so we have to make the most of it,'' Dempsey said. "And I'm sure if we play to the best of our ability, we'll get a positive result.''

Altidore has recovered sufficiently from his left hamstring strain to be available, though Klinsmann hinted on Monday that the striker was doubtful to start.

Altidore has not played since the Americans' June 16 opener, when he was taken off on a stretcher during the first half.

"Just having him with us tomorrow is huge,'' Klinsmann said on Monday, adding Altidore's time on the field depends on "how much work is in his legs.''

Zusi was a substitute in the opener against Ghana and provided the corner kick from which John Brooks scored the winning goal, then started the next two games.

Klinsmann created a stir by saying he isn't happy with FIFA's choice of referee, Algeria's Djamel Haimoudi. His nation was eliminated by the U.S. in 2010, and Algeria played in the same first-round group as Belgium.

The U.S. lineup:

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard
Defenders: Fabian Johnson, Omar Gonzalez, Matt Besler, DaMarcus Beasley
Midfielders: Geoff Cameron, Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones
Forwards: Alejandro Bedoya, Graham Zusi, Clint Dempsey

Belgium will feature a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Divock Origi up top supported on the wings by Dries Mertens and Eden Hazard. Romelu Lukaku, who played with Howard at Everton last season, is on the bench.

Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois
Defenders: Toby Alderweireld, Vincent Kompany, Daniel Van Buyten, Jan Vertonghen
Midfielders: Marouane Fellaini, Axel Witsel; Kevin De Bruyne, Dries Mertens, Eden Hazard
Forwards: Divock Origi
