Qualified nations: Russia (hosts), Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Uruguay.

The 40 African nations still standing in the qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup learned the identities of their group stage opponents during a star-studded event at The Nile Ritz-Carlton in Cairo on Tuesday, but not everyone will be happy with their lot.

Nigeria 'careful but we are optimistic' after World Cup qualifying draw

Such is the state of Nigerian football at the moment that even something as benign as the draw ceremony for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, held in Egypt on Tuesday evening, came fraught with controversy.

Gernot Rohr, who coaches the Nigeria Super Eagles team and has been at every other draw ceremony since taking the job, was not present in Egypt. Instead, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) general secretary Mohammed Sanusi represented Nigeria.

Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and South Africa face tough roads to Qatar as African qualifying competition for the 2022 World Cup was unveiled on Tuesday.

Group D, which features regional powers Cameroon and Ivory Coast, will also include Mozambique and Malawi.
