USWNT star Lloyd, 36, won't rule out retirement

Carli Lloyd would not rule out retirement after again coming off the bench for the United States in the Americans' 2-0 victory in the Women's World Cup final against the Netherlands on Sunday.

Earlier this month, Lloyd, 36, said she wanted to play at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but she was more equivocal after the national team's win against the Netherlands, in which she entered the game in the 87th minute.

"The goal was winning. It's been a really tough couple of years for me -- I've been open and honest about it," Lloyd said. "First and foremost, I'm really proud of this team and proud to be on this roster of 23 players to win another World Cup."

Lloyd, 36, was FIFA's player of the year in 2015 and 2016 and won the Golden Ball as the best player at the 2015 World Cup, but she played only a substitute role this summer in France.

Although she was one of three U.S. players to play in all seven games, she started only one -- in the group stage against Chile, when she scored twice.

"Like I said, it's been a really tough couple of years," Lloyd said when asked again about her future plans. "It's not based on my ability and for whatever reasons, coaches made the decision. I tried to put up a good case [to play].

"So I'm going to go home, I'm going to kind of let the emotions die down a little bit, speak to my husband and we'll go from there."
