FIFA: St Petersburg pitch will be ready for Confederations Cup final

FIFA has said the pitch at the St Petersburg Stadium will be ready for the Confederations Cup final despite suffering damage throughout the tournament.

The playing surface had to be relaid after cutting up easily during games at the refurbished ground earlier this year.

Colin Smith, FIFA's director of competitions, told reporters that the stadium's "young pitch" had sustained damage from matches as well as training sessions.

"We did significant top dressing last night," he said. "Tomorrow we will fully cover the pitch and really regulate the temperature and the growing conditions in there.

"We're confident that it will be a good playing surface for the final."

Smith added that greenhouse structures with grow lights had been installed over the pitch's poorer areas, adding that rainy weather conditions had "not helped" the situation.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo criticised the pitch after the weekend win over New Zealand, complaining that the grass was too long.
