Zenit move back to old ground as pitch for Confederations Cup unfit for play

The pitch for the Confederations Cup final is in such a poor state that Zenit St. Petersburg have been forced to play their next game at another ground.

Large chunks of the newly installed grass at the Krestovsky Stadium have been torn up in the two games played there so far.

As a result, World Cup organisers and Zenit have decided to move Wednesday's fixture against FC Krasnodar in the Russian Premier League.

The game, the last one scheduled there before the Confederations Cup, will now be held at Zenit's old Petrovsky stadium.

Zenit say the decision "will allow organisers to completely prepare the St. Petersburg Stadium pitch" for the Confederations Cup and "will spare the young grass pitch extra strain."

There are bare patches across the pitch, and the corner flag quadrants are filled in with artificial grass.

The 68,000-seat stadium will hold three Confederations Cup games in June, and the final on July 2.

Russia will host New Zealand in the opening game of the competition, the test event held by the World Cup hosts 12 months before the finals, on June 17. Cameroon face Australia on June 22 with the final group game being New Zealand against Portugal on June 24.
