New Everton stadium could help Commonwealth Games bid - mayor

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson says a new Everton stadium could be key in the city landing the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

A joint statement on Monday from Everton and Liverpool City Council said they had been investigating alternative plans for a new stadium for the club, with the focus no longer on Walton Hall Park but two other potential brownfield sites within the city boundary.

Mayor Anderson wants Liverpool to follow recent British hosts Manchester and Glasgow in staging the Commonwealth Games in 10 years' time.

And, quoted on Tuesday by the Liverpool Echo, he said a new Everton stadium could host "not just the Commonwealth Games but things like the European Athletics championships and other sporting events."

He added: "It could be good for the city region and the bid for the Games.

"The new ground, when it's getting built, could accommodate that. Most of these events take place outside the football season so the ground could be used all year round."

The Echo also reported Mayor Anderson expects the new stadium to be built within three years, with him describing the timeframe as "doable."

Everton have played their home games at Goodison Park, which has a capacity of just under 40,000, since 1892.
