Everton board to discuss Roberto Martinez's future on Friday - report

Everton manager Roberto Martinez could be sacked in a week's time as the Toffees are set to hold a meeting over the Spaniard's future on Friday, according to a report.

The 42-year-old Martinez has presided over a frustrating campaign at Goodison Park, with the team sitting 11th in the Premier League table and coming off the heels of a crushing late loss in the FA Cup semifinal to Manchester United.

Earlier on Thursday, Martinez said he hoped his side's recent run of results won't be viewed in isolation, and backed his record over three years at the club to keep him from the axe.

The Telegraph reports the club's new majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright are expected to attend the meeting, and says the former Arsenal stakeholder has been concerned by recent fan discontent and the team's poor run of results.

Meanwhile, Martinez, who moved to the club from Wigan in June 2014, told reporters on Thursday he's been given no indication about his fate.

"No, no, no. I've been given no indication whatsoever," Martinez said, when asked if he'd received word about his job status.

"Clearly, that's not in my hands, and that's not a question that I can answer."

Martinez has managed to construct an entertaining side featuring exciting young talent, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley, Gerard Deulofeu and John Stones all rising to prominence under his watch.

However mid-table finishes and a lack of defensive solidity have angered supporters and brought him in for intense criticism from those who views his work as an underachievement comparative to the wage bill.

"It's time for scrutiny, I accept that," Martinez said. "If I didn't, I wouldn't expect to come to Everton and shout that I want to take the football club to challenge for silverware and get into the Champions League.

"I could have said, 'We have the ninth biggest budget in the league, so if I finish ninth, I've done a great job. If I give a couple of youngsters an opportunity, I'm a genius. And don't expect anything else, because we haven't got a penny'.

"I'm not that sort of manager, so the scrutiny is there and is right."
