Ross Barkley too young for Manchester City move, says Gareth Barry

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley is "too young" to move to Manchester City at the end of this season, according to teammate Gareth Barry.

But the 21-year-old could move on in the future if he reaches his full potential, Barry has acknowledged.

Barkley is one of several English players reportedly wanted by City, along with Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling and Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez.

The Everton youth team graduate went to the 2014 World Cup with England after impressing at club level last season, but has struggled since.

Barry, though, does not think a move to the Etihad Stadium this summer is the answer for Barkley.

The experienced midfielder, 34, has experienced for himself the pressures of playing for City, who he joined from Aston Villa in June 2009.

Barry was 28 at the time of his move, and thinks Barkley would be better off continuing his development at Goodison Park under the management of Roberto Martinez for now.

He told British newspapers: "Personally, I think he's still too young to make that move.

"He's got the right manager here to push him to the next level.

"As soon as he reaches that next level, then there's another decision to be made. At the moment, I think it's too early."

Barkley is under contract at Everton until 2018, having signed a new deal last July.
