Everton manager Roberto Martinez hails Samuel Eto'o's performance

Everton manager Roberto Martinez held Samuel Eto'o's performance up as a shining example to the rest of his team after the veteran striker's brace lifted the Toffees to a 3-1 win at Burnley.

The 33-year-old opened the scoring early on with a thumping header that went in off the crossbar before his turn and shot four minutes from time bookended the scoring.

While his goals sealed victory, Martinez was more impressed by the former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward's all-round display, especially as Eto'o also played the full 90 minutes in the Europa League clash at Lille on Thursday.

He told Sky Sports News: "When he's in that type of form he can play anywhere. I think what he brings is a real know-how, a real experience.

"I thought the performance he had today, I'm sure that everyone will speak about the goals and what he did in front of goal, but I was so pleased with the role that he had off the ball and the way he worked for the team.

"He set real standards today and I was very, very pleased. Two games in a week for someone with his experience was a real example of performance.''

The Cameroonian himself added: "I am happy for my performance, for the two goals, but I am more happy for the team performance.''

Everton were pegged back following the opener when Danny Ings levelled things up in the 20th minute, but Romelu Lukaku soon put Everton back in the lead and they were forced to cope with a few nervy moments before Eto'o sealed victory.

Gareth Barry admitted it was far from a vintage performance but was pleased to get the three points.

"We were delighted to get the early goal and probably took our foot off the gas a bit,'' said the former Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder. "They obviously got their goal from a mistake but we kept going and two fantastic goals from Sammy has won us the game.''
