England's Euro 2016 humiliation vs. Iceland tops UK Twitter list

England's exit from Euro 2016 at the hands of Iceland was the UK's most tweeted-about sporting moment of the year, figures released figures by Twitter's "#ThisHappened" reveal.

Roy Hodgson's side crashed out of the tournament to the minnows when goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson sent them to one of the most humiliating defeats in English football history.

The match sent social media users into a frenzy in the UK, with a record 128,000 tweets-per-minute -- 21,000 more than when Leicester clinched the Premier League title after Tottenham's draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

But the Foxes' tweet to say that they had become champions was the most retweeted of the year, garnering almost 396,000 retweets.

England's 2-1 win over Wales in the group stages at Euro 2016 saw 77,000 tweets sent every minute, making it the UK's third most tweeted-about sporting moment.

All the year's top 10 sporting moments came in football, with seven of them during Euro 2016.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's confirmation of his move to Manchester United attracted 222,000 as the third most retweeted message, while United's 4-0 thrashing at Chelsea in October is the most discussed Premier League game of the season so far with 1.8 million tweets posted.

Manchester United were the top trending football club of the year ahead of Liverpool and Leicester -- but it was not all about the Premier League, with Newcastle (fifth), Aston Villa (seventh) and Leeds (ninth) all making the top 10.
