Martin O'Neill proud despite Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 defeat to France

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill said he felt "disappointed but proud" after watching his side beaten 2-1 by France in the Euro 2016 round of 16.

Ireland took the lead after only two minutes when Robbie Brady struck from the penalty spot, but two second-half goals from Antoine Griezmann turned the game around before Shane Duffy was sent off four a foul on the France forward.

"The team have put absolutely everything into the games that we have played," O'Neill told ITV Sport.

"The only disappointment we had was the second half against Belgium. Apart from that, it has been a phenomenal effort. Phenomenal.

"Physically it was very, very demanding today but we got the goal and we were pretty comfortable in the first half.

"Perhaps if we had gone another six, seven, eight minutes without conceding a lot of pressure would have come on to France and we could have used that to our advantage."

Ireland captain Seamus Coleman said the players had felt a win over France "was there for us" and added: "We gave our all going into this tournament and we're just so disappointed at the minute, but I suppose that shows how well we've done.

"Our fans were unbelievable and we'd have loved to go a bit further for them, but we hope we made people proud.

"We're just disappointed that we couldn't see it out. But the second half was always going to be tough for us. We played well but we just couldn't keep the door closed for long enough, which is disappointing."
