Christian Fuchs: Austria will show 'spirit' against Iceland

Austria will have the "spirit" in their last Euro 2016 group match versus Iceland, captain Christian Fuchs has said.

Marcel Koller's side have to beat Iceland to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

Austria have only picked up one point from their first two matches against Hungary and Portugal, and have yet to score at the finals in France.

On Wednesday, they face Iceland who go into the match with two draws from their games against the other two teams in Group F.

Should Austria not be able to pick up three points, they will be eliminated from the competition regardless whether they finish third or fourth in their group.

But despite their starting position on Wednesday, Austria remain upbeat about their chances of advancing to the knockout stages, with captain Christian Fuchs telling reporters that the national team players are used to such situations.

"We've shown in the qualifiers that we can handle pressure situations," the Leicester City full-back said.

"Many of us have battled for titles, against relegation or a starting berth in Europe with their clubs. We are aware that we can only win promotion to the knockout stages by defeating Iceland."

He added: "We have the spirit, and are there 100 percent. We want to and we will have more of the game. But the Icelanders are no duds."

Austria midfielder David Alaba, 23, who had come under pressure by domestic media following two disappointing performances said: "I promise that we will do all we can to achieve our big goal."

Coach Koller also issued a rallying call. He told reporters: "We are still alive. The hope absolutely lives."

Alaba, who played in attacking midfield against Portugal, could be moved back into holding midfield, with either Alessandro Schopf, 22, taking the central role behind attacker Marc Janko or Zlatko Junuzovic, who could make a surprise return from injury, according to Der Standard.
