Cristiano Ronaldo misses penalty in Portugal's draw; Belgium cruise

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty and Portugal settled for a second straight draw at Euro 2016 as their Group F game against Austria finished goalless.

The Real Madrid star stepped up to take the penalty in the 79th minute after Martin Hinteregger hauled him down in the box, but the Real Madrid star struck the post.

Portugal took 23 shots but could find no joy against Austria, who earned their first point following an opening defeat to Hungary.

Ronaldo was repeatedly denied by Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer, and all eyes were on him at the penalty spot after Hinteregger's foul, which came as he tried to prevent Ronaldo from reaching a cross near the six-yard box.

But the post denied Ronaldo from becoming the first player to score in four different European Championships, as did the offside flag in the 85th minute after Ronaldo had headed on a free kick into the back of the net.

Earlier in Group F, a late Birkir Mar Saevarsson own goal denied Iceland a first-ever victory at a major tournament as Hungary stayed top with a 1-1 draw in Marseille.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had earlier scored from the penalty spot and a resolute defensive performance gave Iceland hope of a win that would have sent them to the top of the group.

But Saevarsson's late error, turning a cross into his own net, ensured that the spoils were shared.

The result means that Hungary need just a draw from their final group game against Portugal to seal a place in the knockout stages, while Iceland require a win against Austria to guarantee progression to the round of 16.

Hungary lead Group F on four points, with Iceland second with two, ahead of Portugal on goals scored, while Austria are bottom.

In Group E, Romelu Lukaku scored twice and Axel Witsel once as Belgium got off the mark at Euro 2016, comfortably beating Republic of Ireland 3-0 in Bordeaux.

Ireland had only one effort on goal with keeper Thibaut Courtois helping Stephen Ward's looping 19th-minute header on to the roof of his net.

They were appealing in vain for a penalty within two minutes of the restart when striker Shane Long appeared to take a boot in the face as central defenders Thomas Vermaelen and Alderweireld attempted to prevent him from reaching Robbie Brady's teasing free kick, but worse was to come.

Referee Cuneyt Cakir waved play on and Belgium broke at pace with De Bruyne surging down the right before picking out Lukaku, who shifted the ball on to his left foot before drilling into the bottom corner with Randolph powerless to resist.

Thomas Meunier turned the screw after the hour mark when he crossed for Witsel to power a header past Randolph and effectively seal victory.

Meunier then found Hazard, who skipped away from the white shirts before handing Lukaku his second of the afternoon on a plate.
