Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena has played down fears over a thigh injury and said he expects to be fit to represent France at Euro 2016.

Valbuena, 31, missed his club's Ligue 1 match against GFC Ajaccio on Saturday after injuring his right thigh in training the previous day.

But he wrote on his Facebook page: "To reassure those who have wished me well, and to cut short the unfounded rumours about my fitness, I want to emphasise that I am not suffering from any muscle damage and my sporting future is not affected.

"I felt a small pain, nothing serious, before the last league game. With important dates to come, I decided to take no risks and to have several scans.

"It seems I am not suffering from anything serious. The pain is mainly to do with fatigue. Depending on how I feel this week, I could return very quickly."

A definitive diagnosis of Valbuena's injury will follow further scans on Wednesday.

The player has struggled for form and fitness for much of this season, and has also had to cope with an alleged blackmail attempt against him.

In November, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was charged with conspiracy to blackmail over an alleged attempt to extort money from his international teammate using a sex tape.

Earlier this month, the French Football Federation announced that Benzema would not be selected for Euro 2016 as a result of the ongoing investigation.
