Karim Benzema using Euro 2016 snub to fuel Real Madrid form - Varane

Raphael Varane believes Karim Benzema is even more motivated to help Real Madrid reach their goals after being omitted from France's Euro 2016 squad.

Benzema, 28, scored his 23rd league goal of the season as Real beat fourth-placed Villarreal 3-0 on Wednesday to stay just one point behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga.

The former Lyon forward is also likely to be an important factor in his side's upcoming Champions League semifinal against Manchester City.

Benzema will play no part at Euro 2016, however, after French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet and France head coach Didier Deschamps announced earlier this month that he would not be selected.

Last November, Benzema was charged with conspiracy to blackmail as part of an investigation into an alleged attempt to extort money from France teammate Mathieu Valbuena using a sex tape.

He was suspended from his national team as a result and will not be recalled when Deschamps names the host country's 23-man squad for Euro 2016 on May 12.

Varane, 22, is likely to be involved for France this June and the Real Madrid defender says Benzema's absence could end up helping their club.

"He's transforming this disappointment into motivation," Varane told AFP. "I feel that he's very concentrated on the end of the season -- very motivated.

"He really wants us to win titles and score important goals."

Varane feels that can only benefit Real Madrid and stressed that Benzema has not been overlooked by France due to a lack of talent.

He also feels that his teammate has consistently demonstrated that he is able to put his off-field worries to one side.

"He's someone who's very strong mentally," the centre back said. "He's already proven that. He's not allowed himself to be destabilised and, despite the disappointment, he remains motivated."
