Michael O'Neill laments Kyle Lafferty's 'frustrating' Norwich season

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has expressed his disappointment that striker Kyle Lafferty has seen so little action with Norwich this season.

Lafferty, 28, played a huge part in Northern Ireland's qualification for Euro 2016, scoring seven goals as his side surprisingly topped their group ahead of Romania and Hungary.

It has been a different story at club level, however, as the ex-Rangers striker has made just three substitute appearances for Norwich across all competitions this season.

Lafferty had been expected to set up a loan move in January but he reportedly knocked back an approach from his former club Sion in the hope of sealing a short-team deal with another English team.

Although Leeds, Bristol City and Wolves were said to be interested, a transfer never materialised. The situation is hardly ideal ahead of Northern Ireland's Euro 2016 campaign in France, where they will face Poland, Ukraine and world champions Germany in a difficult group.

O'Neill already has one major selection problem after losing experienced West Brom midfielder Chris Brunt due to a knee injury.

The Northern Ireland boss said he was "devastated" that Brunt would not be travelling to France but he has promised to help Lafferty to get in shape in time for this summer's tournament in June.

"It's very frustrating for Kyle," O'Neill said at a pre-Euro 2016 press event in Paris.

"I had hoped that the situation may have been resolved in January.

"Any manager, you always want you want your players playing. It's easier for Kyle if he's playing first-team football as well.

"We've got a month between when the Premier League season finishes and when the tournament starts so we'll have to be very careful. We'll have to tailor our programme specifically for Kyle to make sure he's right to play.

"I mean he's in no jeopardy of not coming to the tournament. But I think his frustration has boiled down to the fact that really he's not been given the chance at the end of the day.

"I think he's played less than 60 minutes of football this season for Norwich so it's not as if he's had the opportunity and hasn't performed.

"So I can understand his frustrations. But equally he's still hugely important to us. Along with his co-operation -- he's fully focused -- we have to make sure that he's right and he's going to have a good tournament."
