Sweden coach Erik Hamren confirms that he will step down after Euro 2016

Erik Hamren has said he will step down as Sweden coach after Euro 2016, the Swedish Football Association vice president has announced.

Lars-Christer Olsson told state broadcaster SVT that Hamren had confirmed that he would leave after the tournament in France, Reuters reported -- a decision that had been widely expected.

Hamren, who steered his side to the tournament with a playoff victory over Denmark, took over from Lars Lagerback in 2009.

But after Sweden failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup and finished third in their Euro qualifying group behind Austria and Russia, Hamren had been under pressure.

"He has given us a decision that he is going to step down," FA vice-chairman Olsson said.

Sweden will begin their Euro 2016 campaign against Ireland at the Stade de France on June 13, and also face Italy and Belgium in Group E.
