French sport minister: Euro 2016 fan zones an 'essential' part of tournament

French secretary of state for sport Thierry Braillard says fan zones will be a vital part of Euro 2016 and promised that they will be among the safest places to watch a game this summer.

The presence of areas where supporters could follow a match on a big screen in one of the 10 host cities had been cast into doubt following November's terror attacks in Paris.

Shortly after the attacks, which saw 130 people killed, one security body warned that such plans would have to be scrapped unless local organisers could cover increased security costs.

However, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve later said that extra security measures would be put in place to allow fan zones to be established during Euro 2016.

Speaking on Monday, Braillard said it was important that fan zones go ahead.

"They are essential," he told RMC. "Work has been done to make them extremely secure. We are encouraging people to go to the fan zones by saying 'it's better to go a secure fan zone than to a gathering set up in an insubstantial manner and that could put the safety of those present in jeopardy."

On a sporting level, Braillard said the solidarity shown since the shocking events in the French capital on November 13 could help France win Euro 2016.

"This renewed patriotism will be visible in a positive manner behind our French team, which will perhaps be supported like never before by the French people," he told RMC. "They will want joy, a celebration, to see a French team that wins. That's an extremely important element."
