Germany boss Joachim Low delighted by Bastian Schweinsteiger return

New Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to play his first international match since the World Cup final win over Argentina.

Coach Joachim Low, announcing his squad for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia and friendly against Australia, said the return of the Bayern Munich midfielder following injury problems was "a huge win."

The official German FA (DFB) website quoted him as saying: "Bastian is our captain -- he's got a lot of leadership qualities.

"We need him, on and off the pitch. It's a huge win for us that he returns. I'm convinced he can draw on his good performances for Bayern in the Champions League and Bundesliga."

Munich centre-back Holger Badstuber receives his first call-up to the Germany squad since November 2012, while midfielder Ilkay Gundogan returns for the first time in almost two years.

Badstuber last featured for Germany in the 4-4 draw against Sweden in November 2012 before suffering a knee injury that ruled him out for almost two years.

In August 2013, Gundogan was forced out of the game against Paraguay in Kaiserlautern with a back injury that would rule him out for 14 months.

"Both have put an incredibly longer period of suffering behind them," Low said. "I was touched to see Holger and Ilkay back on the ball, and I am impressed how soon they have returned to their old class.

"It's admirable how they coped with their situations. They have worked hard and, despite several setbacks, never lost their optimism."

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil and Dortmund's Marco Reus both return following recent injury-related absences, while Sami Khedira and Lukas Podolski are called up despite their struggles at Real Madrid and Inter Milan. Former Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle is also in the squad.

Four games into the 2016 European Championship qualifiers, Germany are third in group D following defeat in Poland and a draw with Ireland.

"It's an unfamiliar situation for us, but it is not a problem," Low said. "Our senses are sharpened, we know what is required from us and we can't afford any more slip-ups. We want all three points in Tiflis."
