Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gotze injured ahead of last Germany qualifier

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is likely to join Mario Gotze on the sidelines for Germany's final Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia on Sunday.

The Germany captain, 31, felt his left thigh tighten in the final training session ahead of the world champions' game against Republic of Ireland on Thursday.

It was then decided that he should sit out the 1-0 loss in Dublin.

Bayern attacker Gotze, meanwhile, appeared to overstretch as he tussled for possession with Ireland midfielder James McCarthy in the first half. In obvious discomfort, he was replaced by Wolfsburg's Andre Schurrle after 35 minutes.

Germany manager Joachim Low has confirmed that they will have to plan for their final Group D game against Georgia in Leipzig without Gotze, while Schweinsteiger, whose place in the starting lineup on Thursday was taken by Marco Reus, also appears set to miss out again.

"Mario Gotze will definitely not be there on Sunday," Low told a news conference in Dublin. "For Bastian Schweinsteiger we'll have to wait and see but his chances are quite slim."

Germany still need a point against Georgia to seal their place at next summer's European Championship in France following their defeat in Ireland.

Thomas Muller said after the game that "play-acting" and a "weak referee" played a part in the defeat, while Low complained that the Irish had scored from their "100th long ball."
