Marco Reus back in Germany squad, Bernd Leno wins first call-up

World champions Germany have recalled Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus for this month's Euro 2016 qualifiers against Republic of Ireland and Georgia.

Reus, 26, is fit again after dropping out of the squad for last month's victories over Poland and Scotland due to a toe injury.

Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno will join up with the senior team for the first time. The 23-year-old is the only new face in Joachim Low's 23-man squad for next Thursday's match in Dublin and the game against Georgia in Leipzig three days later.

Group D leaders Germany need just one point to book their ticket to France next summer but Low said they are looking to finish their campaign with another six points.

"We want to be serious and concentrated until the end of the campaign," Low told the German FA's (DFB) website. "Our aim is to win both games against Ireland and Georgia and to qualify for the European Championship in France as group winners.

"I have great confidence in the players, who already masterfully met this target [of two wins] in September.

"These players are regularly called upon by their clubs in the league and at European level so they're in good shape. These are good conditions for what are decisive matches in our group."

Germany were pegged back by a last-gasp John O'Shea goal in a 1-1 draw in Gelsenkirchen when they first met Ireland 12 months ago but they had an easier time of it on their last visit to Dublin two years ago.

Reus scored twice in a 6-1 World Cup qualifying win back then but Low is expecting a tougher challenge this time.

"How dangerous the Irish are is not something we only know about since the home game," he said. "And to play against Ireland in Dublin is anything but a foregone conclusion.

"A great atmosphere is awaiting us and the fans will stand behind their team like one man and encourage them until the last minute.

"We need to have cool heads and patience to survive there. But if we play to our potential and concentrate on our abilities we'll also create chances. I'm really looking forward to the game and the atmosphere in Dublin."

Leno, who replaces Hannover's Ron-Robert Zieler in the squad, will provide back up for Manuel Neuer along with Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Germany's goalkeeping coach Andreas Kopke said that Leno, who has been first-choice keeper at Leverkusen since 2011, deserved his chance.

He said: "Bernd has earned this call-up by putting in consistently good performances at Bayer Leverkusen and just like Marc-Andre ter Stegen, we have been watching him for some time."
