England first to qualify for Euro 2016 as Wayne Rooney equals goals record

England became the first team to qualify for the 2016 European Championship by beating San Marino 6-0 on Saturday, with Wayne Rooney's opening goal tying him for first place on the country's all-time scoring list.

Rooney set England on their way to a seventh straight win in Group E by converting a 13th-minute penalty to move onto 49 international goals -- the same total as Sir Bobby Charlton.

An own goal in the 30th minute was followed by second-half goals from Ross Barkley, two from Theo Walcott and one from Harry Kane, putting England through with three games to spare.

Rooney was substituted in the 59th, denying him the opportunity to break Charlton's record against San Marino's part-timers. The next chance for Rooney to hold the scoring record outright should come on Tuesday against Switzerland.

Spain beat Slovakia 2-0 to move level on 18 points at the top of Group C.

The win by Vicente del Bosque's side avenged a stunning 2-1 loss at Slovakia last year that ended Spain's 36-game unbeaten run in qualifiers.

Jordi Alba headed in a well-placed pass from David Silva to get Spain going in the fifth minute.

Andres Iniesta converted Spain's dominance into a second goal after Diego Costa earned a penalty on the half-hour mark.

It was Slovakia's first defeat in seven Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Ukraine made light work of Belarus to win 3-1 and put pressure on the top sides in Group C.

Artem Kravets opened the scoring after seven minutes, before Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka made it 3-0 at the interval.

Sergei Kornilenko pulled a goal back from the spot for Belarus, but it was too late to prevent Ukraine from beating them for the second time in qualifying.

Also in Group C, minnows Luxembourg got a stoppage-time winner from Sebastien Thill to defeat Macedonia 1-0.

It looked as if it would be Macedonia claiming the three points when Ben Payal fouled Besart Abdurahimi in the area with just six minutes left, but home goalkeeper Jonathan Joubert produced a fine stop from the resulting penalty.

And Thill took advantage in the second minute of time added on as he superbly controlled on his chest before looping a volley into the top corner.

Russia revived their hopes of qualifying from Group G by defeating Sweden 1-0 at home.

Artyom Dzyuba ended Russia's 11-month wait for a competitive goal, scoring off the post in the 38th minute, after Igor Smolnikov played on Roman Shirokov's backheel pass.

Late on, Sweden's Martin Olsson cleared an Alexander Kokorin shot off the line.

It was Russia's first game under coach Leonid Slutsky, who was appointed last month as the replacement for the departed Fabio Capello, under whom Russia won two of their last 10 competitive games.

Russia stayed third in Group G but are only one point behind Sweden, who hold the second of the automatic qualifying places.

Group leaders Austria won for the sixth game in a row as Zlatko Junuzovic scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory against bottom-placed Moldova.

The Austrians failed to break down a determined Moldovan defense until the 52nd minute, when Zlatko Junuzovic scored on the rebound after David Alaba's low shot was parried.

Referee Aleksandar Stavrev disallowed a Marko Arnautovic goal for offside in the 41st minute, though the Austrian winger received the ball from a Moldovan defender.

Austria have a seven-point lead over Sweden and need one point from their last three games to secure qualification.

Also in Group G, fourth-placed Montenegro won 2-0 at home against Liechtenstein with goals from Fatos Beciraj and Stevan Jovetic.

Jovetic provided the opening goal for Fatos Beciraj after 37 minutes, and the Inter Milan striker drilled a ball across the area and Beciraj volleyed past goalkeeper Peter Jehle.

The roles were then reversed for the second goal 11 minutes after the restart as Beciraj fed Jovetic, who hit a precise shot from the corner of the area to find the far corner as Montenegro claimed the win.

Switzerland rallied from two goals down to defeat Slovenia 3-2 and stay on pace to also qualify from Group E.

Milivoje Novakovic opened the scoring for Slovenia just before half-time and Bostjan Cesar doubled their advantage three minutes after the break.

Switzerland waited until 10 minutes from time to start their comeback, but Josip Drmic got it started and Valentin Stocker levelled the score on 84 minutes, and Drmic found the winner deep into stoppage time.

Also in Group E, Konstantin Vassiljev's 71st-minute goal gave Estonia a 1-0 win over Lithuania.

The victory put Estonia into third place, in position for a playoff spot.
