Arjen Robben set to miss Netherlands-Turkey Euro 2016 qualifier with injury

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Arjen Robben is set to miss Netherlands' vital Euro 2016 qualifier against Turkey after the winger limped out of Thursday's defeat against Iceland.

Robben, 31, left the pitch only 31 minutes into his country's 1-0 loss at the Amsterdam Arena after picking up a groin injury.

Two minutes later Danny Blind's side saw Porto defender Bruno Martins Indi sent off for violent conduct, and Iceland's Gylfi Sigurdsson scored from the penalty spot early in the second half to seal the Netherlands' first home defeat in a European Championship qualifier in 52 years.

Netherlands sit third in Group A with three games remaining, and trail Czech Republic -- whose current standing of second would secure direct qualification for the tournament in France next year -- by six points.

The Oranje are one point ahead of Sunday's opponents Turkey, but Blind said after Thursday's game that Robben would not travel to Turkey.

"Robben was withdrawn with groin problems and will most likely miss the Elftal's crucial match in Turkey on Sunday," Bayern announced on their official website on Friday morning.

Sunderland midfielder Jeremain Lens has been called into the squad to replace Robben, the Premier League club have announced.

Lens, who has 30 senior caps, has made four appearances for the Black Cats and scored the equaliser in last Saturday's 2-2 Premier League draw at Aston Villa.

Comments by Robben in postgame interviews seemed to suggest he will return to Munich for further treatment, football magazine kicker reported.

"It's just beyond me. I was totally fit, and thus I can't and don't want to believe that it has happened," Robben said, adding that a rough duel close to the box was the cause of the injury.

"Something got stuck in my back, and after that I wasn't really able to move well. And then it radiated into the groin. It soon became clear that I could not carry on, because I was not able to bring any power to the left side."

The Bayern winger has struggled with injuries for the past six months. He suffered an abdominal muscle injury in March, and was ruled out for the remainder of the season when tearing a calf muscle only 16 minutes into his comeback in late April.

Robben has started all three games of the new Bundesliga season, but has yet to complete a full 90 minutes.
