Reus and Muller earn Germany a comfortable Euro 2016 qualifying win

World champions Germany enjoyed a comfortable victory in Georgia while Scotland and Northern Ireland picked up key wins in European Championship qualifying on Sunday.

Two goals in five minutes just before halftime were enough for Germany to win 2-0 vs. Georgia in Tbilisi. Marco Reus swept the world champions in front after good work by Mario Gotze before Thomas Muller doubled the lead in the 44th minute.

Joachim Low's men had chances to add to their lead in the second half but were unable to capitalize. Reus was denied by the crossbar just as he had been when the game was still goalless.

Portugal went top of European Championship qualifying Group I with a 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday.

Defenders scored both Portuguese goals as Ricardo Carvalho and Fabio Coentrao netted in each half, either side of a spectacular equalizer from Nemanja Matic with an overhead kick.

Portugal's third straight win under Fernando Santos, who took charge after Cristiano Ronaldo's team lost its opening qualifier against Albania, gave it nine points from four games.

Shane Long came off the bench to keep the Republic of Ireland's chance of qualification for Euro 2016 alive with a dramatic late equaliser against Poland.

The Southampton frontman's 91st-minute strike -- the 12th goal of his senior international career -- snatched a 1-1 draw with the Group D leaders, who remain unbeaten as they attempt to book a trip to France.

Slawomir Peszko's 26th-minute opener had looked to be enough to keep the Poles in the driving seat for one of the two automatic spots, but Long's intervention denied them at the death in a classic game of two halves.

Elsewhere in Group D, a hat trick from Steven Fletcher -- Scotland's first since 1969 -- and two Shaun Maloney penalties helped Scotland ease to a 6-1 victory over Gibraltar, who at least had the consolation of scoring their first-ever competitive goal.

After Maloney opened the scoring from the penalty spot at Hampden Park, the visitors silenced the home crowd when Lee Casciaro equalised less than a minute later.

Scotland responded with three goals in 10 minutes before half-time as Steven Fletcher, a second Maloney penalty and Steven Naismith all found the net.

Fletcher, who last scored for Scotland in 2009, added his second with a header after 77 minutes and completed his hat trick in the 90th minute with a low, left-footed finish.

Greece's miserable Euro qualifying campaign continued as they drew 0-0 with Hungary at the Groupama Arena.

The Greeks had lost three of their opening four Group F matches, one of which was a humiliating 1-0 defeat at home to the Faroe Islands.

They were hoping to kick-start their campaign against a Hungary side who had registered consecutive wins against the Faroes and Finland.

Greece had found the net just once in their opening five matches and they knew a win was needed if they had any chance of qualifying, with the top two, Romania and Northern Ireland, on 13 and 12 points respectively.

In Group F, leaders Romania consolidated top spot but missed the chance to improve on their goal difference by only beating the Faroe Islands 1-0.

Claudiu Keseru got the all-important goal when he reacted quickest to a deflected Alexandru Maxim free-kick that hit the post.

Romania were grateful to goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon for a last-minute save that denied Joan Edmundsson an equaliser.

In the same pool, a pair of Kyle Lafferty goals maintained Northern Ireland's push for their first appearance at a major tournament since 1986 as Finland were beaten 2-1 in Belfast.

Lafferty opened the scoring after 33 minutes with a superb volley and five minutes later headed home his fifth goal of the qualifying stage.

Finland gave themselves late hope through Berat Sadik but the home side held on for victory.

In Group I, Albania recovered from falling behind early to beat Armenia 2-1.

Yura Movsisyan gave the visitors a 4th-minute lead in Elbasan and it was not until 13 minutes from full-time, with Armenia down to 10 men after Hovhannes Hambardzumyan was sent off, that Albania drew level.

Mergim Mavraj scored the equaliser and the winner came just four minutes later through substitute Shkelzen Gashi's far post header.
