Ex-France boss Raymond Domenech keen on Ireland job

Former France boss Raymond Domenech has revealed he dreams of becoming coach of the Republic of Ireland.

Domenech, 63, guided France to the 2006 World Cup final but has been out of football since his six-year tenure in charge of Les Bleus ended following the catastrophic 2010 World Cup when they finished bottom of Group A behind Uruguay, Mexico and hosts South Africa without winning a game.

There were also controversial scenes as the French players went on strike after Domenech clashed with Nicolas Anelka during a match and sent the striker home, causing widespread damage the national team's reputation.

France had only reached South Africa by beating Ireland in a playoff during which Thierry Henry clearly handled the ball in the build-up to the decisive goal, scored by William Gallas.

However, the Irish clearly made a positive impression on Domenech, as he told Ma Chaine Sport he would love to have Martin O'Neill's job.

"There's a national team that I have dreamed of coaching for ages, that's Ireland," said Domenech.

"I have been back there since and I have had a few drinks with some Irish. I love those people, I love their spirit. I was in the stands, it was amazing. Whether it be football or rugby, they don't make the opposing fans enemies.

"They're partners who do something with each other. They drink with them, party with them, they go head-to-head, and once it's finished, they go home."
