Belgium and Man City wait on scan of Vincent Kompany calf strain

Vincent Kompany will miss Belgium's friendly against Iceland on Wednesday as they and Manchester City wait to discover the severity of his calf injury.

The centre-back, captain for both club and country, had a scan on Monday on what his national team manager Marc Wilmots called "a little strain."

He has not joined up with the Belgium squad, although it is hoped that he will be available for Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Group B leaders Wales.

"Kompany stays in Manchester until Wednesday," Wilmots told Sky Sports News. "He has a little strain in his calf. He'll undergo a new scan on Monday."

Kompany suffered the injury in City's 2-1 defeat to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League last week, and missed Saturday's 2-2 draw at Queens Park Rangers.

Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis were paired at the heart of the defence in his absence, and his calf problem comes at a time when Edin Dzeko and David Silva are also injured.

Belgium are also without sidelined centre-back Thomas Vermaelen but can call upon players such as Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Nicolas Lombaerts in the middle of defence.

Uncapped City teenager Jason Denayer, who is on loan at Celtic, could make his debut against Iceland.
