Berti Vogts stands down as Azerbaijan coach after Croatia thrashing

Berti Vogts has stepped down as coach of the Azerbaijan national team after six years in the role, he has confirmed to German news agency SID.

Vogts, 67, left the role after the 6-0 European Championship qualifying defeat in Croatia on Monday with Azerbaijan at the bottom of group H.

The former Scotland coach had a contract that ran until the end of the qualifying campaign, but a statement on the official Azerbaijani FA website said: "Berti Vogts noted with regret that he couldn't see his future with the Azerbaijan national team.

"He said he was willing to share his knowledge with the coach under whose leadership the team will play the next games, and if necessary to share information about opponents and players. He will always remain as a friend of Azerbaijani football."

Vogts, who worked for U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann in an advisory role at the World Cup in Brazil, enjoyed his greatest success as a coach when he guided Germany to the 1996 European Championship title in England.
