Thirty detained as violence mars Romania-Hungary Euro 2016 qualifier

Police say 30 Romanians were detained at the 2016 European Championship qualifier between Romania and Hungary after supporters lobbed firecrackers and smoke bombs before the match.

Police used tear gas and evacuated fans ahead of Saturday's match, which ended 1-1 in Bucharest.

Firecrackers and shouting drowned out the Hungarian national anthem before the match while afterwards Hungarian fans received a police escort out of the capital to buses and trains.

Police spokeswoman Irina Dragan said 30 Romanian supporters were detained and five were banned from football stadiums for a year.

Medical authorities said on Sunday that some people suffered fractures and minor head injuries.

Interior ministry official Gabriel Oprea said 12,000 police and riot police were deployed, with an estimated 800 fans travelling from Hungary to the Romanian capital.
