Sources: Fernandes' Prem dream on hold

Bruno Fernandes looks set to stay at Sporting Lisbon for the time being after discussions with interested Premier League clubs broke down, sources have told ESPN FC.

Fernandes, the sought-after Portuguese midfielder, was linked with a move in this transfer window with Sporting wanting a fee in the region of €70 million.

But amid interest from Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, it is understood a move to the Premier League is now off the table for the time being with clubs unwilling to meet Sporting's asking price.

United were heavily linked with Fernandes earlier in the transfer window, but it is understood they did not table a bid.

However, their interest caused Sporting to hike up their asking price for Fernandes. Sources have told ESPN FC City were interested in signing the midfielder earlier this summer for a fee in the region of €50m, but Sporting wanted €70m so City ended their interest.

Tottenham Hotspur looked the most likely destination for Fernandes in recent days, but a source has told ESPN FC they have had three bids turned down and are unwilling to meet the €70m threshold.

Spurs have since been in talks with attacking midfielders Paulo Dybala and Giovani Lo Celso.
