Chelsea begin title defence vs. Burnley; first visitors to Tottenham at Wembley

With the 2017-18 English Premier League fixtures being announced, ESPN previews the opening fixtures and key dates of the North London, Manchester and Merseyside derbies. (0:45)

English champions Chelsea begin the 2017-18 season with a home game against Burnley before being the first team to face Tottenham at Wembley in the Premier League.

In the other opening-day fixtures, Manchester United host West Ham, Manchester City travel to newly promoted Brighton, Liverpool face Watford and Spurs are at Newcastle. Huddersfield, whose last season in the top-flight was 1971-72, play Crystal Palace.

Of the other standout fixtures for Antonio Conte's side, Chelsea play Arsenal on Sept. 16, host City on Sept. 30 before United visit Stamford Bridge on Nov. 4.

On Boxing Day, Chelsea are at home to Brighton, Liverpool take on Swansea at Anfield, United host Burnley and Tottenham play Southampton at Wembley. Manchester City travel to Newcastle. There are then fixtures on Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 with Arsenal vs. Chelsea and Everton vs. United the highlights on New Year's Day.

United's first major test of the campaign comes on Oct. 14 when they travel to Anfield. Before that, Jose Mourinho's side play West Ham, Swansea, Leicester, Stoke, Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace, with Manchester derbies on and Dec. 9 and April 7.

Liverpool face a tougher start with Arsenal and City in their opening four fixtures. They host Everton on Dec. 9, while the return fixture is April 7. Other notable games include a trip to Arsenal on Dec. 23 and the away fixture vs. United on March 10.

After going to Anfield on Aug. 26, Arsenal go to Chelsea on Sept. 16 and City on Nov. 4 -- both after playing Europa League games on Thursday night. In total Arsene Wenger's side have five away games immediately after Europa League fixtures. Their first home game against a major side is on Nov. 18 when Tottenham visit the Emirates. They then host United on Dec. 2 and Liverpool on Dec. 23. The North London derby at Wembley is on Feb. 10.

There are also plenty of significant fixtures following Champions League games, with Chelsea vs. Arsenal, Chelsea vs. City, Chelsea vs. United, Liverpool vs. Chelsea, Liverpool vs. Everton, City vs. Arsenal, City vs. United, United vs. Everton and Spurs vs. Liverpool among them.

Tottenham have five of six home games after playing in the Champions League, while Chelsea and United have four each. City, meanwhile, face four away games following their six European games.

In the end of season run-in, Chelsea play Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in the penultimate round of fixtures, and United host Arsenal the weekend before on April 28.

Meanwhile, West Ham face the possibility of having to play their first three matches of the season away from home. The club have confirmed their second fixture, scheduled to be at home to Southampton, will have to be rearranged due to the World Athletics Championships being held at the London Stadium.

The fixture could be reversed, meaning the Hammers would face three games on the road.

In a statement on their official website, the club said: "Our opening fixtures in August will be played away from home as London Stadium welcomes the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships for a once-in-a-generation occasion. Supporters are therefore advised that our second fixture of the campaign, against Southampton, will be rescheduled, with further details to follow."
