English game sets up taskforce to investigate retrospective diving bans

Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) chief executive Gordon Taylor has confirmed to The Times that a taskforce has been set up to look into the proposal to introduce retrospective bans for diving.

The Football Association confirmed this week that talks are taking place with the Scottish Football Association, which already issues retrospective two-match bans for simulation, about the pros and cons of the situation.

The Times reports that the Football League, League Managers' Association and PFA held a meeting on Wednesday over the topic and Taylor said: "A working party will be set up to deal with this aspect of the game, particularly where such simulation deliberately deceives the referee and is a game-changer."

The newspaper suggests the ultimate decision may be influenced by the prospect of video-assistant referees -- currently being trialled across the game, including in the Premier League -- which would make it easier for officials to take action over simulation at the time of the event rather than retrospectively.

Referees in England are currently permitted to issue a yellow card for simulation but the lack of certainty can favour those looking to deceive officials, as well as seeing players wrongly punished.
