Man United's Zlatan Ibrahimovic will prove worth in England - Durmaz

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's former international teammate Jimmy Durmaz has backed the Manchester United forward to prove his worth in the Premier League before retiring.

Ibrahimovic, 35, has scored six times in 11 Premier League appearances for United since his summer move from Paris Saint-Germain.

However, his double strike against Swansea City last weekend marked his first top-flight goals in seven outings, and his barren spell had raised questions about whether the former Sweden international had lost his touch.

"At this moment in time, Manchester United are struggling. But I know him, he's going to tear it up," Toulouse attacker Durmaz, 27, is reported as saying by L'Equipe. "The team just needs to get going, and he'll show everyone there they were wrong about him. So, he could then hang up his boots, and everyone will regret it."

Durmaz's suggestion Ibrahimovic could retire after shining in England would fit with the way the former Juventus, Barcelona, Inter and AC Milan striker ended his glorious career with his nation.

After helping Sweden qualify for Euro 2016, Ibrahimovic, who is his country's all-time leading scorer with 62 goals in 116 appearances, announced his retirement from international football after the final tournament in France.

Sweden are currently joint top of 2018 World Cup qualifying Group A but, ahead of Friday's game against France in Paris, Durmaz would welcome a U-turn on Ibrahimovic's decision.

"If he wants to return to the national team, it will come from him," he said. "I respect his decision and in a way I understand it. He wants to do things his way. He always told us that he wanted to stop at his best.

"He retired from international football at the top. I'm certain it will be the same for him with his club career," the former Olympiakos striker said.

"During a meeting with the national team, I sent him a photo of the room where we usually have our meals with the message 'Come back.' It wasn't a request of the sort 'Come on, please, you absolutely have to help us.'

"I asked him that as a friend, as an international player. By leaving, of course he left a big void, it could be no other way."
