New Sunderland defender Papy Djilobodji wants to demonstrate that he was good enough to play for Chelsea.
Djilobodji, 27, last week became David Moyes' first purchase as Sunderland manager for a fee of £8 million.
A surprise signing for Chelsea last September, the Senegalese centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Werder Bremen.
Djilobodji's goal on the final day of Bremen's Bundesliga campaign saved the German club from relegation but he then felt the need to prove himself in the Premier League. "At the end of the season, they wanted me to stay but I was on loan and I wanted to return to England," Djilobodji told L'Equipe.
"It's the best league in the world -- I want to show something there.
"I just want to show that I'm still here -- that I've matured too. Because there are plenty of people who say that I wasn't good enough for Chelsea. "I want to show that I could have played, to enjoy myself and to please everyone."
Djilobodji played only once for Chelsea, coming on for a matter of seconds in a League Cup tie at Walsall.
Despite never featuring in the Premier League, however, the former Nantes player enjoyed his spell at Stamford Bridge.
"I trained, I returned home and I didn't play," he said. "But I was training with the best players in the world -- I learned a lot of things over there all the same.
"It was a good passage for me. I would have liked to have played more but if you're not given the chance you can't do anything."
Djilobodji joined Chelsea when Jose Mourinho was still in charge but the Senegalese international admitted that he never discussed his lack of playing time with his manager.
"I'm not the type of person who goes to see the coach to ask him to play me -- I never did that," he said. "One of Mourinho's assistants told me to go talk to him but, no, I didn't want to.
"What I was showing in training, for me, was sufficient. Beyond that, if he wants to put me in, it's good.
"And if he doesn't select me, there are no worries, I stay on the bench peacefully."
Djilobodji also said that a call from Moyes encouraged him to move to Sunderland and that he hopes to finish in the top 10 with his new club.
