Don't laugh at Leicester City's 40-point target - Claudio Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri has insisted that Leicester City's primary target is to reach 40 points in the 2016-17 Premier League season after losing to Manchester United in the Community Shield on Sunday.

The Foxes did well to come back from a goal down through Jamie Vardy's equaliser, only to lose 2-1 after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late winner found the back of the net.

Despite going into the new season as defending champions, Ranieri has warned his players to start with the same humble attitude that took the club to the top of English football last time out.

"Forty points [is the target]," Ranieri said after the game. "Don't laugh! I restart with the same philosophy, the same humility, that is it.

"What we achieved was fantastic, but now, 40 points. Then, we'll see."

While United may have won the first piece of silverware for the season, the Italian tactician reckoned his side put up a good showing and he was not surprised by Jose Mourinho's counter-attacking tactics.

"Congratulations to Manchester United, but also to my players as we made a great match," he said.

"Second half we played very well. I thought the minimum we deserved was penalties, but when you play against great champions, this can happen.

"They knew our counter-attacking strength well and did everything to stop us. We're not at 100 percent, but it's positive."

Leicester will kick off their league season away to Hull City on Aug. 13 while United play a day later at Bournemouth.
