Chelsea see off Werder Bremen, Liverpool thrashed by Mainz

Chelsea recorded a 4-2 friendly win over Werder Bremen in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Eden Hazard opened the scoring on seven minutes, firing home following a short corner, and the Belgian was involved in the build-up when Oscar added a second two minutes later.

Bremen's veteran striker Claudio Pizarro scored against his former club from the penalty spot on 33 minutes after Nemanja Matic had fouled Zlatko Junuzovic.

Diego Costa made it 3-1 just before the half-time break after superb work from Hazard, but the Bundesliga side again reduced the deficit through substitute Lennart Thy's low drive in the second half.

Pedro Rodriguez had the final word after he collected a Cesc Fabregas pass that had been flicked on by Michy Batshuayi.

Theo Walcott boosted his confidence by scoring the decisive goal for Arsenal in a 3-2 victory over Manchester City on Sunday in their final preseason warmup ahead of the new season.

Walcott made a perfect run into the box to meet Alexis Sanchez's pass and chipped a delicate finish over the onrushing Joe Hart to make it 2-1 in the 73rd minute as the Gunners came from a goal down in the second half.

Substitute Chuba Akpom then made sure of the Gunners' fourth straight preseason win in the 85th minute before Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back for City.

Jurgen Klopp's return to Mainz -- a team he played for and managed -- was not a happy one as his much-changed Liverpool side suffered a 4-0 loss in their final preseason friendly of the summer.

After Saturday's 4-0 win over Barcelona, the Reds' performance against the Bundesliga outfit in Germany was abject, with goals from Daniel Brosinski, Jhon Cordoba, Yunus Malli and Yoshinori Muto condemning them to a deserved defeat.

There are further injury worries for the Liverpool boss after midfielder Marko Grujic landed awkwardly on his ankle and had to come off in the 40th minute at the Opel Arena.

Juventus beat West Ham United 3-2 in a game staged at the Hammers' new London Stadium, with Simone Zaza scoring a late winner for the Italian champions.

Juventus began brightly, and were 2-0 up, before being pegged back by two Andy Carroll strikes.

The visitors came close to re-establishing a lead when Hernanes struck the bar and finally grabbed a winner in the 85th minute when a long pass from substitute centre-back Luca Marrone found Zaza in open space, and he finished well, guiding his shot past Adrian.

Southampton recorded a 1-0 win over La Liga club Athletic Bilbao.

Nathan Redmond had come close to giving Saints the lead on 41 minutes but saw his effort pushed onto the post by goalkeeper Iago Herrerin.

Shortly afterwards, Shane Long raced clear through on goal from Steven Davis' pass before casually slotting past the advancing Herrerin from just outside the area, and that proved enough to secure victory.

Schalke saw off Serie A side Fiorentina by a final score of 3-1 at the Veltins Arena.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored in the third minute to put the hosts in front, with Nikola Kalinic levelling for Fiorentina before the break.

Naldo put Schalke back in front in the 70th minute before Choupo-Moting added a second before full-time to seal the win.
