Wales reject Hull City approach for manager Chris Coleman

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has confirmed it has rejected an approach from Hull City for manager Chris Coleman.

The newly promoted Premier League club have been looking for a successor to Steve Bruce following his departure on July 22, and Coleman and Gianfranco Zola were reported to be the frontrunners for the job.

The FAW confirmed that Hull had made an approach for Coleman, who led Wales to the semifinals at Euro 2016, but said he would not be permitted to leave.

A statement read: "The Football Association of Wales can confirm that it has received an official approach from Hull City FC for the services of manager Chris Coleman.

"Following discussions amongst leading figures within the association the approach has been rejected.

"Chris Coleman signed a new two year contract in May 2016 ahead of the UEFA European Championships in France and the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

"Everybody at the FAW are fully focused on the forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign."

Reports in Italy on Monday said former Watford and West Ham boss Zola, sacked by Qatari club Al-Arabi in June, had been the subject of an approach from the Tigers.

The Press Association reported earlier on Tuesday that Hull, who open their 2016-17 Premier League campaign by hosting champions Leicester on Aug. 13, are looking to have their new man in place by Wednesday.

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
