Wojciech Szczesny hopes Arsene Wenger resists England interest

MARSEILLE -- Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny says Arsene Wenger is an ideal candidate for the vacant England job but he wants the Frenchman to stay on at the Emirates.

Wenger, who has a year remaining on his current Arsenal contract, has been touted as one of several potential candidates to replace Roy Hodgson.

Poland international Szczesny, who has said his own future is unclear after his loan spell with Roma, said he would like to see Wenger stay on at the Emirates Stadium.

"I am sure he would be a great thing for England, but my main interest is Arsenal football club and I hope it doesn't happen, for the sake of Arsenal, not for the sake of England," he told reporters in Marseille after Poland exited Euro 2016 on Thursday.

"Obviously England had a disappointing time at Euro 2016 and changes will be made, but hopefully that will not affect our club. I hope it is something that will not happen because he is doing a fantastic job at Arsenal and I'd love to see him stay there."

Szczesny, meanwhile, says Arsenal can improve on last season's second-place Premier League finish as they missed out to Leicester City.

He said: "That's what we love about the Premier League, the competitiveness, so we can't complain about it. Leicester fully deserved to win the title in what was an amazing story.

"Maybe it was a missed opportunity for Arsenal but they had a good go and came close. It was disappointing for me to see as a fan, but with the new signing [Granit] Xhaka and possibly one or two more, we can compete again."

Szczesny said that Arsenal's record of finishing in the top four of the Premier League in every season since 1996-97 deserves respect, adding: "People have been saying for 20-odd years that our place in the top four is under threat, and we keep finishing there.

"But I don't think that should be the goal for Arsenal football club. We should be aiming to win titles and I see a big opportunity next season."
