AFC Wimbledon have been charged by the Football League after failing to use MK Dons' full name during their League One clash in September.
Wimbledon called the visitors either MK or Milton Keynes and did not use any pictures of the team or badge in the matchday programme for the League One game.
It was a repeat of the first meeting between the two sides at Wimbledon's Cherry Red Records Stadium in March, and came despite the EFL seeking assurances that MK Dons would be treated the same as any other visiting side.
Wimbledon have been charged under EFL regulation 3, which states that no club "shall by any means whatsoever unfairly criticise, disparage, belittle or discredit any other club."
An EFL spokesman said: "The EFL has confirmed that AFC Wimbledon have been charged in breach of Regulation 3 following their match against MK Dons on Friday Sept. 22.
"Their case will now be heard by an independent panel and the EFL will make no further comment until the matter has been determined."
AFC Wimbledon were formed by disgruntled Wimbledon fans in 2002 after the Football Association controversially allowed Wimbledon to relocate to Milton Keynes.
Wimbledon changed their name to MK Dons in 2004 and this is the second season that the two clubs have been in the same division following AFC Wimbledon's meteoric rise from non-league football.
AFC Wimbledon are still considering their response, with a statement on their official website saying: "AFC Wimbledon has received notification from the EFL of charges relating to the Milton Keynes home game.
"The club is still deciding on its response to the charges and we will therefore be making no further comment on this matter for the time being."
The game, the sixth between the two sides, ended in a 2-0 victory for MK Dons.
