Dwight Gayle's brace leads West Brom at Stoke; Aston Villa thrashed

Dwight Gayle scored twice as West Bromwich Albion defeated Stoke City 2-1 at the Hawthorns on Saturday in a battle of relegated teams.

Gayle, on loan from Newcastle United, scored in the 16th and 59th minutes for West Brom, with Erik Peters pulling back a consolation in added time for Stoke.

Sheffield United defeated Aston Villa 4-1 with first-half goals by Jack O'Connell, Mark Duffy and Oliver Norwood setting United on course for the victory.

Villa's afternoon went from bad to worse after the break when Billy Sharp made it 4-0, and Anwar El Ghazi's strike, just past the hour mark, was scant consolation for Villa manager Steve Bruce, whose side were a win away from rejoining the top flight last season but have started the new campaign inconsistently.

Derby County's Florian Jozefzoon grabbed a late goal to earn a 2-1 win at Hull City, who have lost four consecutive home games in all competitions this season.

Leeds United and Middlesbrough played to a goalless draw at Elland Road on Friday to leave them level at the top on 14 points, ahead of Sheffield United and Derby.

Nottingham Forest saw their unbeaten start to the season end with a 2-1 loss at Brentford, with Swansea City 2-1 winners at Millwall and Bolton Wanderers drawing 2-2 away to Preston North End.

Adam Reach and Lucas Joao scored for Sheffield Wednesday, who won 2-1 at winless Reading, with Liam Moore scoring the home side's only goal.

Wigan defeated Rotherham United 1-0 behind a goal from James Vaughan and Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers drew 0-0.
