Fulham edge Sheffield United in nine-goal thriller, Cardiff into second

Ryan Sessegnon and Leon Clarke both scored hat tricks as Fulham edged a goal-laden game 5-4 to end a six-match drought and stop Sheffield United going to the top of the Championship on Tuesday.

Sessegnon's treble, in addition to two goals from Sheyi Ojo, had put the Cottagers in a seemingly commanding position at 5-2 up before Clarke completed his second successive hat trick at Bramall Lane, after Samir Carruthers had also scored, to threaten the comeback.

But Fulham held on to record their first win since the end of September and inflict just a third home league defeat of 2017 on the Blades.

Cardiff overtook Chris Wilder's side and moved into second place in the table after a late Callum Paterson goal snatched a 1-0 victory for the Bluebirds at Barnsley.

Aston Villa are up to fourth after goals from Albert Adomah and Joshua Onomah ensured a losing start for Chris Coleman in his first game as Sunderland manager.

Lewis Grabban's 10th goal of the season was only a consolation for the Black Cats and defeat kept them rooted to the bottom of the Championship, four points from safety.

Bristol City stay in the playoff places despite losing 2-1 to Preston at Ashton Gate. Paul Gallagher and Callum Robinson put Preston in control and substitute Cauley Woodrow scored a late consolation goal for City.

Derby are up to sixth after Tom Lawrence scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 victory against QPR, who have now failed to win away in the league since January.

The Wales international struck early in the second half after Matej Vydra's ninth goal of the season put Gary Rowett's team ahead in first half stoppage time.

East midlands rivals Nottingham Forest are hot on their heels after a 1-0 home win against Norwich. Former Ipswich striker Daryl Murphy scored the only goal of the game at the City Ground.

At the other end of the table, Reading battled back with two goals inside the last 15 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw at Bolton.

First-half headed goals from Reece Burke and Darren Pratley put Wanderers in command as they chased just a third Championship win of the season. But Reading eventually turned overwhelming possession into goals as Liam Moore pulled one back before Leandro Bacuna scored from the penalty spot with seven minutes left.

Burton battled back to draw 1-1 at Brentford. Florian Jozefzoon gave the Bees the lead with a delightful curling free kick but Ben Turner headed an equaliser with 12 minutes remaining.

Millwall and Hull shared a goalless draw at The Den.
