Russell Crowe drops interest in Leeds United takeover for sake of his children

Russell Crowe will not continue his interest in taking over Championship club Leeds United.

The Australian actor, who won an Academy Award for his role in "Gladiator," admitted earlier this year that he was growing "impatient" regarding the progress of the club's takeover, and revealed on Twitter that he would not follow through his interest because of the time it was taking.

The 50-year-old already owns the rugby league side South Sydney Rabbotahs and tweeted that his children came first when he was considering new business opportunities.

Crowe said in March that he had always been a fan of the club.

"Since I was a little kid, Leeds has been my club," he said. "I love the club and I want nothing but success for the club, so I have a simple fan perspective.

"But I don't want to put any pressure on the current administration, I never sort of said that to put a rocket up their backside but I think it worked anyway. But that wasn't intentional and it's not for sale at this point in time."

Italian Massimo Cellino, who bought Leeds from Bahrain investment firm Gulf Finance House Capital in December 2013, was disqualified from running the club earlier this year.

Cellino was told he could not run the club by the Football League in January following his conviction in Italy for tax evasion and had his ban extended for withholding information about his conviction. However, he is now back in charge after serving his suspension.
