Sami Hyypia resigns as coach of Championship strugglers Brighton

Hyypia saw his Seagulls side pick up just one Championship win since August.

Sami Hyypia has left Brighton & Hove Albion just six months into his contract after the Championship club's board accepted the manager's resignation on Monday.

The former Liverpool defender took over from Oscar Garcia on a three-year contract in the summer, but the Seagulls sit in the relegation zone after just one win in 18 games.

Sources told ESPN FC on Dec. 15 that former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood is thought to figure highly on Brighton's wanted list.

Matty Fryatt had two goals ruled out in controversial fashion as Nottingham Forest were denied a Sky Bet Championship victory over Leeds at the City Ground.

The Reds striker had given Stuart Pearce's side the lead in first-half injury-time - but either side of that he had two efforts ruled out for offside, with television replays suggesting they should have stood.

And Neil Redfearn's side secured a 1-1 draw as former Forest player Billy Sharp netted emphatically from the spot in the 54th minute, after...

Midfielder David Cotterill lit up an otherwise dour SkyBet Championship encounter with a stunning free-kick to earn Birmingham a 1-0 win against Huddersfield.

The swerve on Cotterill's 70th-minute effort appeared to deceive Huddersfield keeper Alex Smithies.

Blues striker Clayton Donaldson was fouled on the right edge of the box by Anthony Gerrard and Cotterill stepped up for the set-piece.

Smithies seemed to have the shot covered but as he put his hands up to catch the ball it moved in mid-air.

And...

Ipswich returned to second in the Sky Bet Championship standings with a convincing 2-0 victory over fellow promotion contenders Middlesbrough.

Daryl Murphy opened the scoring after 25 minutes before Jay Tabb netted a crucial second just before half-time, heading home after a beautiful three-man move from the Suffolk side.

Boro offered little in the second half as Ipswich comfortably continued their fine home form.

Less than a minute after kick-off, Ipswich carved out the first chance when Tommy Smith...

Matt Ritchie scored twice to confirm Bournemouth's place at the top of the Championship at Christmas with a resounding 6-1 victory over bottom side Blackpool.

The Cherries - beaten on Wednesday by Liverpool in the Capital One Cup quarter-final - bounced back in superb fashion to make it 12 league games unbeaten, which in turn left Blackpool rooted 10 points adrift of safety.

Ritchie scored in either half and Callum Wilson also helped himself to his 11th league goal of the campaign in the first period.
