FA charges Wigan chairman Dave Whelan over comments

Malky Mackay was named Wigan manager earlier this month.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has been charged by the Football Association over remarks he allegedly made in response to criticism of the club's decision to appoint Malky Mackay as their new manager.

Whelan, 77, publicly apologised for comments attributed to him in The Guardian and strongly denied making any racist remarks, while also suggesting he was misquoted.

However, an FA statement read: "It is alleged the Wigan Athletic chairman breached FA Rule E3[1] in that his comments were abusive and/or...

Darren Bent joins Brighton on loan from Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes his side should receive plenty of credit with their 1-1 draw with second place Southampton.

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has dropped down to the Championship to join Brighton & Hove Albion on loan.

Bent, 30, who cost Villa 18 million pounds from Sunderland in 2011, has agreed an initial one-month deal with the Seagulls after falling out of favour at Villa Park. He has made eight appearances for Villa this season but failed to score.

The former England international could make his debut on Saturday against Fulham, the club where he spent last season on loan.

Daryl Murphy's second-half header earned Ipswich a 2-2 draw with high-flying Bournemouth at Dean Court.

The Irishman leaped highest to head home a Paul Anderson delivery after Matt Ritchie had previously regained the home side's advantage.

Bournemouth had already been pegged back once before after Yann Kermorgant saw his spectacular opener cancelled out by Teddy Bishop.

It took less than two minutes for Eddie Howe's side to take grab the lead at Dean Court as Kermorgant gave the hosts the advantage...

Millwall held Charlton Athletic to a goalless draw as both sides contested a surprisingly tame South London derby at The Valley.

The visiting supporters took full advantage of their short trip east by filling an entire stand, although there was a notable lack of intensity from both teams for much of the game.

Charlton were boosted by the inclusion of striker Igor Vetokele, who scored the winning goal against Reading a fortnight ago and played here despite a calf problem.

The best opportunity of the...

Jordan Rhodes scored two second-half goals as 10-man Blackburn Rovers fought back to secure a dramatic 2-1 win over Leeds United.

The visitors looked on track for a first away win since August thanks to Souleymane Doukara's opener after 30 minutes, but the game was turned on its head late in the second half.

A calamitous mix-up gifted Rhodes a 71st-minute equaliser and though Tom Cairney was sent off soon after, Rovers grabbed a dramatic winner through a Rhodes penalty after former Leeds forward Luke...
