Football Association facing UEFA fine over FA Cup replay - source

The Football Association will be hit by a UEFA fine for scheduling Manchester United's FA Cup win over West Ham on the same night as the Champions League, a source has told ESPN FC.

The quarterfinal replay at the Boleyn Ground, which United won 2-1, was fixed for April 13 following a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on March 13.

The match clashed with Bayern Munich's visit to Benfica and the meeting of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona -- both Champions League quarterfinal second legs.

The FA Cup clash began earlier than usual at 7 p.m. BST, but still broke UEFA rules that all domestic matches must end at least 30 minutes before the European matches kick off, in order to ensure maximum exposure for the governing body's sponsors.

When scheduling the game last month, the FA conceded there were "limited options available," adding that "the agreed date may not be an ideal solution for all but was the most appropriate available within the congested football calendar."

The source said senior figures at the FA are exasperated by the situation because Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week were all European nights, while Monday or Friday matches would have encroached on the Premier League's schedule, leaving them no choice but to break UEFA's rules.

The FA was reportedly fined £42,000 by UEFA in March when Arsenal's 4-0 FA Cup fifth-round replay win over Hull City clashed with Champions League round-of-16 matches.
