Police probe alleged racist tweet aimed at Arsenal's Danny Welbeck - reports

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are investigating an alleged racist tweet directed towards Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck, according to reports.

The post on Twitter followed Welbeck's decisive goal in the Gunners' 2-1 FA Cup victory against his former club Manchester United on Monday night.

The BBC reports that police were made aware of the abusive message when members of the public contacted them.

The Daily Mail reports that GMP are trying to trace the Twitter user who posted the message, while the Manchester Evening News quotes a spokeswoman for GMP as saying: "We are aware of it and are investigating."

Welbeck, 24, said of his match-winning performance against United: "It was a great reception. It was hard for me but I tried to be respectful.

"It was about being professional, keeping my focus and motivation. I kept plugging away and then got on the end of Antonio Valencia's backpass, beat David de Gea and got the winning goal.

"I'm just really pleased we're through to the next round. I stayed professional and I was just doing my job. To be able to get back on the scoresheet and get through to the next round is the most important thing [rather than scoring against United]."
