Adam Lallana says he will come back stronger after being released from standby duty ahead of next week's World Cup.
The Liverpool midfielder battled injuries all season and started just three matches for his club this term. Despite that, his England dream wasn't dashed until after the Three Lions' final warmup against Costa Rica on Thursday, when manager Gareth Southgate told him and Tom Heaton they would no longer be consider should the team suffer a costly injury.
"Of course, I'd be lying if I didn't say that I want to be out there, but these things happen, it's the circumstances and I wish the lads the best of luck," said Lallana. "I will be their biggest supporter I can tell you that. I feel we have a fantastic chance.
"I have been in constant dialogue with Gareth throughout the whole season really, not just since my last injury, the hamstring back in March, and he has been absolutely fantastic with me.
"He called me to ask if I would be happy to be on standby. I said to him that I would always be available. It has been a difficult season, but I feel like I will be stronger for it. I felt like I did the right thing coming and training with England in the last week. It has not been easy. It was always about being available and helping the gaffer and the squad by being part of the sessions and being around it.
"He explained the situation and was completely honest. His communication with the players is one of his greatest strengths -- he never messes you around, so you know where you stand and that's been the case since he called me to say I wouldn't be in the 23."
Of England's chances in Russia, he added: "Gareth has a great group of players there. Young, fearless and I honestly think they are going to do well. You have seen it in the last 8-10 games, especially the last two, he is really getting across his ideas and the way he wants the team to play. It will be exciting to watch.
"He made 10 changes for the Costa Rica game and you saw an identical performance to the one against Nigeria. It was completely different personnel, different qualities on the pitch, but the same idea and following how the boss wants to play. I was there watching both matches and it looked really exciting to be a part of. That cohesion, playing without fear with the shackles off and it is great to see.
"It will be difficult not being in Russia, but I want to wish all the lads all the best, especially Jordan [Henderson] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. I will look forward to picking up with England for the European qualifiers. There is still plenty to look forward to."
Henderson, meanwhile, told media on Friday he was happy to play in a more advanced role, if that's what Southgate wished.
"I will play wherever he wants me to play -- whether that is a more protective role or a more advanced role," said the Liverpool captain.
"Obviously I have been a lot more used to the more entrenched position, but I would be pretty comfortable in either position.
"Every time I play for England I try to do my best and try to give everything.
"It is up to the manager to decide who is in the best XI for the first game and then for the games after that but I have felt in good form for a long time."
